But if you have mounted your legacy lens with an adapter and still get the error messager, there is something wrong with your adapter.

Some are cheaply made and contacts are not good enough. So the camera thinks there is nothing mounted on it.

You can only use A and M modes, where the camera continuously meters and suggests the speed. The exposure bar helps you to check the accuracy and compensate.

Only the S mode doesn't work. Others do work but the problem is that in A mode I cannot change the exposure settings and in M mode I cannot change the shutter speed. Maybe I need to invest in a native NX lens.

In Manual mode you should be able to adjust aperture with the aperture ring, shutter speed and ISO on the camera body. Can you not do that? My NX1100 lets me do it with an old Nikon lens and adapter (the only adapter I have). The focus peaking on the NX1100 is pretty good, too, but from what I'm reading in other posts, your NX1000 may not have that.

Still, you should be able to adjust aperture, shutter speed, and ISO in Manual mode. Or am I missing something?

Honestly I think he was saying he couldn't also change exposure compensation at the same time.... I think he was fundamentally misunderstanding how it all works, which is why I was typing so much.  Maybe he does get it and his camera is on the fritz though, since he also said he couldn't change the iso in manual.

That was exactly what I was trying to achieve. I was also trying to set the exposure compensation in M mode. But I was wrong that I did not know how a camera functions. Nevertheless, I have figured out now and use the M mode and use the metering to properly expose my shots.
I don't know what focus peaking is but there is something called focus assist which I use sometimes.
Thank you again guys.
