Take a look at the photos in some some good food magazines for some tips on composition and depth-of-field.
The second shot suffers from uneven lighting where the lower part of the dish is in shadow. Maybe a reflector or video light could be used to provide more even lighting?
Keep practicing!
Uh... isn't the entire point of shallow DOF to make the subject stand out clearly from the background?
