First, I don't think you need every shot to be shot at wide apertures unless that helps avoid distractions. The shallow depth of field in the spice mound shot is a bit distracting and makes it hard for me to see the subject.

Maybe a table tripod and f/11 would work better.

Take a look at the photos in some some good food magazines for some tips on composition and depth-of-field.

The second shot suffers from uneven lighting where the lower part of the dish is in shadow. Maybe a reflector or video light could be used to provide more even lighting?
