Birding season is ramping up!

With birding season fast approaching, I bet a lot of folks are looking for some bit of new gear to go try out on their favorite subjects.

It can be a really hard decision. I know, as I struggle each and every time myself.

Besides poring over endless specs and anecdotal accounts, one thing that I've found very helpful is to have some large image samples to examine.

I've been out shooting eagles fishing recently (very lucky to have these opportunities within an hour's drive or so!) And so I've been happily putting the 70D and my 400 f/5.6L through their paces.

I can report that AF tracking with my 70D has been excellent. I've been very impressed with the new sensor's detail and color too, and I find that the noise is well controlled (for an APS-C sensor).

These improvements in IQ over Canon's 18 MP sensors means that I can crop more deeply into an image too (a big benefit indeed for us birders!).

First, regarding AF: Here is a an image illustrating this combo's AF tracking ability against trees in the far background...

And against trees in the near background...

Against trees both front and back!...

One from quite a distance against a busy background (Note: I blurred the background in Post to aid composition)...

This combo also did very well when shooting against water...

At a large distance too (full frame, not cropped)...

For the pixel-peepers out there (hey, I'm one too!), here is a 50% crop sample (1:2 pixel dimensions). A touch of noise reduction, a little sharpening...

Click on "Original"

Here is a 100% crop sample (1:1 pixel dimensions). ISO 400, no noise reduction applied...

And here's a full-sized sample (1:1 pixel dimensions). ISO 400, no noise reduction, no cropping or resizing...

I also have some samples from the 70D and 400 f/5.6 with a Tamron (non-reporting) 1.4x TC here...

I'll be adding more images to my galleries as I find time too...

Although if I'm lucky, I hope to be spending Most of my time shooting!

Hope this helps some. Happy shooting,
