My speculation is that most sensor chips don't have a fast enough readout capability to operate as electronic shutter for still shots without BAD rolling shutter, OR they have to have extra more expensive additional support circuitry to get a decently fast readout. 1/10 second rolling shutter is fine for a live view but not super great for shooting most pictures.
I think you're probably right on the money here.
Which is why I feel that if the Samsung NX-mini has implemented electronic shutter with 1/200 second max synch speed, while NONE of the Sony RX 10-100 models offer it, then it increases the chance that its a different sensor with some capabilities that the Sony sensor doesn't have.
If the sony sensor can do completely silent mode with 1/200 second synch with 1/16000 second exposure you'd think they'd let you do it in their cameras.
This part I'm little less sure about. All camera manufacturers seem to quite a few artificial constraints on at least anything short of their very top models.
Agreed.
But isn't the RX10 their top of the line in its category? And RX100 II the top of line in its category?
Really seems that it would be great to have a 1/16000 sec exposure 1/200 sec synch electronic shutter implemented on the sensor as an optional mode, if the sensor is capable of it. Especially on a $1300 fixed lens camera, I wouldn't hobble the hardware.
By category, yeah I believe they are. I wouldn't hobble it either, but who knows how these companies decide to do things the way they do -_-. I think it's not the same sensor anyway, but time will tell.
