They often are. IIRC discussions about Equivalence started in the Canon forums, around the time only Canon marketed both fullframe and crop sensor cameras.

Some of the medium format guys seem to like Equivalence even less than some of the smaller sensor guys. Reason is -I guess- that they prefer their gear to be a qualitative leap better than the quantification [about 1 stop for a 44*33mm sensor] comparing equivalently.

I don't think of equivalence not as holy writ, but as a tool to get more insight into what the trade-offs in image quality between sensor formats are. That is all
