I found the D600 inferior in this regard.

I'll start with by saying that for landscape, people pictures or any other general photography the D800 AF works as it should. If I didn't should BIF, I'd probably have zero issues with the 800/e.

But two years ago +/- I started shooting BIF, and in a lot of situations I'm not as close as I should be. Under those conditions, from worst to best, I would pick D800/e, D700, D4. I have the least experience with the D700 and most with the 800 out of the three.  But I keep going back to the D700 and recently bought another one with the MB-D10 grip and D3S battery and charger. So I'll probably hang on to this D700.
