ED 70-300mm F 4-5.6

For my impending visit to Cape Town, I have chosen my faithful "granny" for travelling companion, i.e. my E-3, with its 12-60mm zoom lens.
However, having been in S.A. before, I know that this focal range won't be enough in some photographic instances.
I am so considering getting the ED 70-300mm referred to above which offers a great focal length in a light package, though I must own I know nothing as to its IQ efficiency, AF and sharpness.
As an alternative I might go for a second hand ED 50-200 F 2.8-3.5 or, even better, its SWD sibling: surely I would gain from a performance standpoint (faster lens and better AF mostly) at the expense of shorter focal lenght and more bulk and weight which are no negligible handicaps.
Thus, my friends, being a bit torn as to which path to take, I resolved to seek advices here on the forum.
I'd appreciate your thoughts and thank you upfront for them.
