Why the funny names for ISO extremes?

Instead of just stating the ISO range as 50 - 25,600 why does Nikon state a more-narrow range of 100-6400, and then use names like Lo-1 and Hi-1?

Is there some reason I should try to stay in the more-narrow range?

Here is how Nikon specks the D800:

ISO 100 - 6400

Lo-1 (ISO 50)
Hi-1 (ISO 12,800)
Hi-2 (ISO 25,600)
