16-35vr at 16mm - difference between it and my 16-85DX

I just bought the Nikon 16-35VR.  In comparing it to my 16-85DX lens, I noticed that it isn't nearly as wide at 16mm shooting with my D300s as is the 16-85.  It appears to be almost a 2mm difference in the angle of view between the two lenses.   I realize the 16-35 is an FX lens, but shouldn't the angle of view be nearly the same at 16mm?  I didn't know if anyone else has both of these lenses and have compared them.    I'm starting to think I should have saved some money and got the 18-35, as the 16-35 looks to be closer to 18mm at the wide end than 16mm.  I really bought it for the extra wide angle range.
