Bad guess

Guess again my friend. And I'm guessing you don't have any of these lenses because anyone who has used Canon super telephotos would know which one of us is right. With a 400mm f/2.8, shooting wide open, even as far away as 100 feet, your DOF would only be three feet. Not enough to get both the horse and rider in focus.

Contributing to my guess that you don't use these lenses is that anyone who has used them would know you generally try to stop down to increase image quality.

The big advantage of the f/2.8 aperture is that it allows for much better AF, especially with TCs. I've never heard a Canon shooter using a super telephoto ever once mention needing a large maximum aperture for "subject isolation".
