Just to clarify your findings with regards to face detection...until you turned it off, were you having problems with it wanting to focus on a face that wasn't the intended subject?  Or was it irregular in detecting helmeted faces of the riders?  Or was it was never finding any faces in this situation, but you found that the focus performance improved significantly once you turned it off so it was no longer even looking for them?  Thanks...sounds like an important thing to be aware of.  I've found face detection to be valuable when working with bright lenses wide open, so I've just left it on most of the time, but I hadn't considered whether it could be detrimental when there are no faces in the frame.
