Go with the EF-S 18-135 IS STM

Too old, not optimised for the 70D, not that suitable for movies because of the noise (??)...

Mostly nonsense (re movie comment - suspect he was talking about noise from the USM motor focusing, which is fair enough - the STM motor will be silent)

According to him the L was not that superb. Of course, it's quality was ok but he had seen lots of them come back for repairs and re-adjustments.

That'll be because it's a zoom lens that's popular and used a lot.

His suggestion was a EF-S 18-135 IS STM lens. At that point I was unfamiliar with the STM motor and because of my severe doubts I decided not to buy today and head home. Still puzzled I now read some reviews and frankly I don't understand why the guy pushed me towards a cheaper lens with this body.

He should have just sold you on the expensive lens instead of trying to be helpful... then you'd have come back for a wider lens.

24mm isn't wide on a crop body. For this reason alone I'd have recommended the 18-135. It's a good lens, good enough that you don't have to bother about the tiny IQ differences between that and the 24-105. I'd supplement it with the 55-250 STM - even if you later decide to get a faster/longer telephone the 55-250 will still retain a place in your kit due to its tiny size and low weight.
