The difference between the first two shots is so minute (just a tiny loss of resolution at higher frequencies) that I would still suggest the difference is due to diffraction. This shows up in reviews, too:


Sharpness starts to fall off even between f/5.6 and f/8. Not huge, but it's there. And if you're carefully examining images at 100% magnification, you're likely to see it.

So as I said before, at 12mm keep the aperture below f/4-f/5.6. The hyperfocal distance at f/5.6 is something like 6 feet (2m).
