Nikon itself does in its high-end cameras. But Nikon and Sony do not in their compact systems and it entirely escapes me why.

The only "crop" offered in the higher end FX Nikons is the DX crop which is still 3:2. There is the ability to crop after exposure in the 'in camera' image editing. After taking a picture I can 'Trim' in camera to 5:4, 4:3, 16:9, and 1:1 in my D7000, and my D90 will do all but the 1:1, and 16:9. Nikon did have a 5:4 aspect in the D3, and some other high end FX models.

That is not entirely correct. The D800/e offers FX (of course), 1:2, 5:4 and DX.

Quite often I can squeeze the larger 1:2 frame size out of a DX lens.

I'm a photo hacker. I use my expensive equipment to destroy anything in front of my camera. This is a special skill that can never be realized by low life photographers. A nurtured skill since the 1970's.
