Is the 12-40mm good enough to forego 12mm, 17mm, 25mm and 45mm primes?

With a tele zoom ratio that low, I agree you will want to take a more pragmatic approach.  In my case, that ratio will be more like 40%, but the 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro is so sweet it's still going to be a wrench to swap it out!
