We were hoping for this lens which had 20 elements in 13 groups including 6 ED and 3 Fluorite lens elements.

Instead this lens is a cheaper design with 16 elements in 10 groups. But they are still charging $1k for it. That will be a tough sell as I don't know if there will be enough IQ improvement over the AFS 70-300 to justify the cost difference.

Looking at the MTF curves the 70-300mm is being measured at double the resolution(20 and 60 lines rather than 10 and 30) so you may well be talking a significant improvement in sharpness up against even the extreme sweet spotting of the 1 sensor on an FX lens.

To me this lens and the new compact kit zoom actually make more sense than anything else in the 1 system so far. The sensor size and FPS/AF performance of the one system make it a more obvious compact action/wildlife camera.
