I think Samsung's resources are too great for them to drop out. They have a huge and very profitable smartphone business, and their tablets also have cameras aboard. They need better imaging technology, and their camera division can help them get there.

Those of us who follow Samsung couldn't help but notice the great strides they have made at high ISO and with JPEG encoding.

They are the two least innovative of the group. Samsung is big company, but they will not waste their money on camera if they can't sell. Sony, they will be in regardless. Pentax, I am surprise they are still in business.

I think Samsung's problem with cameras is the same as Sony's problem with cell phones and tablets. People tend to associate brands with specific areas and that is likely to be a part of their respective struggles.
