Judging by your screen name, I think it's safe to say we both fly with former P-3 guys/gals. Most of the more experienced P-3 aircraft commanders tell me that over time, they just refused to shut down two motors when on patrol.

Real nice series you did there.

I'd rather be lucky than good

Lucky, I've had a fly of a P3 once on an Indian Ocean patrol chasing some funny grey boats and aircraft from an opposition's operation (nudge, nudge, wink, wink ;-)) and it is very heavy to pole around as at the time I was flying the Mirage III but had previously flown the 'Pommy' HS748 with mechanical controls and the P3 didn't feel any lighter even with hydraulics.

It's a great old airframe and has served admirably for a long time and is still unbelievable that it can exceed its Vne even on two engines at sea level and that's over 40 its faster than my 767!!!

Here's a shot with the #4 shutdown and the weapons bay open.
