Need help in choosing a camera

I am looking to buy a point and shoot under $200. I plan on taking everyday photo's of my kids, pets, architecture and nature. I want to have manual controls so that i can learn down the road. Video is not that important to me as I have another device for that. All the specs confuse me and I'd like to get the best out of these two or am open to other suggestion within my price range.  The SX280 concerns me about the battery issues. I understand it's when you have it in video mode but some of reviews have me apprehensive.

Here is what I am crossed between

1) Canon PowerShot SX280 HS

2) Panasonic ZS25
