ND can be easily hand-held...

I'm using 10-stop ND filters for long exposures which you can't handhold :-).

The 14~24 is no way filter friendly. I have thought of the various expensive bulky systems adaptors for some time but end up thinking I can apply that cost towards a lens that will take my existing filters. Plus I just don't have the capacity in my packs to add yet more bulk. Most cases I have shot the needed exposures to combine as long as there is no wind. Just had a thought from old school LF. I'm wondering if to get by with ND that one could tape a small cutout gel ND on the rear of the 14~24.

I tested a used but excellent condition Nikon 20mm f2.8D lens hoping that would have allowed me to leave home my 14~24. Unfortunately it didn't cut it in IQ. I tried it out a couple times with real time shooting but gave up. There is a real gap in that area IMO. with Nikon. I'd rather stay with AF options though I mainly do dot assist MF on my Nikons. With my Fuji X-E1 the 14mm fills that need.
