D7000: Soft Images: Normal or AF Problem?

Hi All,

I own a D7000 and have used it quite extensively over the last year. I have noticed that the images I capture are not very "sharp". The edges are usually soft and look like they bleed into each other.

I dont know whether this is a problem with the camera, the lens, the AF system, or simply - me. I went out on a birding trip recently and took a few shots. I must say I'm not too happy with the results.

An example shot (100% crop) is given below:

The red box indicates the focus point (viewNX) and the camera was set to use the following settings:

Focus Mode: AF-C

AF-Area Mode: 3D-tracking

AF Fine Tune: ON(0)

Aperture: f/5.6

Shutter Speed: 1/125s

Exposure Mode: Aperture Priority

Exposure Comp.: 0EV

Exposure Tuning:

Metering: Spot

ISO Sensitivity: ISO 320

Can you guys tell me why I'm getting such soft images? I understand shooting @ 300mm on a 70-300mm tele lens with a 5.6 aperture wont win me any trophies, but I expected something better.

Thanks in advance!
