Not "We". You are talking about the amount of light per unit area. Which is determined by the actual aperture value.

I think if you run the math, you find that larger formats do not gather more light (focal-plane illuminance) even though their equivalent F stop is larger diameter.

The equations you ran do indicate relative DOF.

Illuminance is the amount of light per unit area. It's the measure of brightness. Total amount of light (luminous flux in the article you linked to) is equal to illuminance multiplied by the area.

If you have two sensors, illuminated with the light of same brightness, the larger sensor will receive proportionally more photons.

Sure, but the f/stop and exposure speed will be the same. That was the topic in this thread.

Well, the topic of the thread was to speculate about two cameras, neither of which came out yet

About f/stop and exposure being the same:  If you have two sensors with the same S/N ratio, that are illuminated by light of the same brightness (same f/stop and exposure time), the sensor that has twice the area will have half the noise.  Your actual ISO values may vary
