If money and size are no object then go for the top of the line 8 or 10X42 Leica, Zeiss or Swarovski models. You will be spending $2,000 to $2,500 USD.

If size but not money is a concern then drop down to the same brands' smaller 8X36 top end units.

If you want excellent optics on a relative budget ($400 USD range) try the Nikon Monarch line.

Coming to photography from birding I use Swarovski EL 10X42s. As photography becomes a bigger concern for me I am thinking of going with their more compact 8X36 model.

All the best and have a great trip,

Thanks, Paul.  Any general differences that you've noticed between the Leica, Zeiss, and Swarovski?  I'm sure there's a lot of personal preference here, but I can't find any stores that carry those brands near my home, so it's a bit of a crap shoot for me.  Also, have you tried enough of the image stabilized lenses to compare?
