Older D-lens. What AF-system is better?

A friend of mine recently offered me to buy his 85mm 1.4D for a good price.
He's been using it with his D7000 and it's been a complete nightmare...back/front-focusing dependig on distance from subject, refusing to focus if not outside during daytime and so on.
He's quite sure the camera is the one to blame.

Since I'm about to upgrade to an FX camera I thought I'd give the lens a try.
I've been thinking of buying a D610. Then again, it has kind of the same AF-system as D7000, right?

Do you think this kind of lens would perform better on say a D700?
I've heard a lot of good things about D700s AF but mostly how good it is in low light.

My final choice of camera will certainly not depend on compatibility with one single lens but I figured it'd be interesting to hear what you think.
