Personally, since my own eyes benefit outdoors from the shade of a hand or a hat, I try to give the image sensor the same benefit. Plus it acts as a bumper-guard against damage (am in the same camp with Ed on the protection). The only time I shoot with it off is in the rare circumstance where I think removing it would actually improve the shot, such as a windy tripod shot in overcast/shady conditions, where a strong wind is striking from an inopportune direction, to cut down on wind vibration.
