Nikon 70-200 F/4 with teleconverter or Sigma 100-300 F/4

I am looking for a telephoto for a D7100. For nature photography and Im going to try to improve my bird photography. Budget is up to about $1500

The options I am considering are the Nikon 70-200 F/4 with a 1.4 X teleconverter or the Sigma 100-300 F/4.

Both lenses are about the same price with the sigma being a bit cheaper, then you also have to add on the price for the teleconverter to the Nikon.

The Sigma resolution figures arent as good as the Nikons (lenstip) so how much would the Teleconverter degrade the image? enough to be about the same as the Sigma?
Also using a teleconverter, dont you suffer some light loss? so F/4 + 1.4 X teleconverter is actually F/5.6 isnt it?

Any other options I may have missed?

Thanks for your help
