Likely a stupid question about exif information

With pictures I take with my Panasonic camera I can find exif information (I mostly use Irfanview for viewing and simple operations). One of the fields of exif information is "Capture date," and an example is as follows:

Capture date   Fri, 28 Feb 2014, 11:26:13 GMT

I am confused by why it says GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) since I took the picture on 28 Feb 2014, 11:26:13 AM my local time, which would be PST (Pacific Time Zone). I know my camera is correctly set to my time zone, but the Capture date field does not show it. I checked the exif of a few other pictures posted by others on this forum and they all say GMT. Is my understanding of GMT in Capture date incorrect?
