Flash is bad?

The use of a flash has been common since the beginnings of photography.  How could it be bad?  The "wash-out" problem happens because there's too much flash power, and because the flash is too close to the object being photographed.  Flash is only bad when it's impractical, such as when working at telephoto distances, or when a flash would be an unwelcome distraction.  If that was the purpose of the course, to teach how to work within the constraints of the lighting conditions that you are given, the course should have done more to teach how to do that.
