Dave you have in the past asked for lens cap RAW files to take noise readings on. Are you able to make those same type of readings on TIFF files? If so would you please do RAW to TIFF conversions using Canon DPP, and 3rd party RAW converters like DCRAW and ACR and compare the noise readings?

I see that you do not understand what a DR of a sensor is. Those TIFF files would have a curve applied to them and in particular, the deep shadows would be cut.

Not sure this is correct. A Tiff is not like a JPEG where curves are applied and information is destroyed.  A 16 bit Tiff can hold all the information that a RAW file has and in my experience does not have to have a curve applied.

Canon's DPP just cuts the deep shadows and the brightest highlights. The illusion of not so much noise comes from the fact that the evidence has been hidden (not in the RAW though - after the conversion).

This could be true as comparisons I've made with lifting shadows with RAW files converted to Tiffs in DPP compared to the same RAW file converted in PS the DPP/Tiff is much cleaner in the shadows yet does not appear to have as much color information.  If I'm lifting shadows to provide some detail the loss of color information is not an issue.  If I'm lifting the entire image because I blew the exposure badly then you'll not end up with anything useful.

I think it's safe to say that Canon has optimized DPP to work within the limitations of their sensors.  Adobe has not done that with ACR so the warts are there for all to see.  Some current sensors have less warts.
