add me to the list of 80-400mmG buyers.  i confess to being deeply conflicted about the purchase: it is more than twice as much -- net -- as i've ever spent a piece of photographic gear; i rarely use a tele; it weighs too darn much; and i do not suffer from Nikon Acq Syndrome.

But when i need a tele, i usually want a long one (longer than 200mm).  The sharpness of the 70-300mmVR has always frustrated me when i went beyond a d80 sensor (d600 now), particularly toward the long end.  Finally lenses are long-lived assets (at least compared to bodies) and this one is sharp enough that it should last me well into retirement.

For me it is a splurge.

Semi-professional in early 1970s; just a putzer since then. interests: historical sites, virginia, motorcycle racing. A nikon user more by habit than choice; still, nikon seems to work well for me.
