It will be a big failure if it doesn't have a built in flash.

It says right here there's a built in flash.

Well, because I found a rumour (that I linked) where a supposedly first hand account of someone that got their hands on one said there isn't one and this slide is actually probably kind of old (considering all the TBDs on it). My gut tells me there will be built in flash, because even the tiniest cameras these days have one, but there is a chance it won't. Personally I wouldn't miss built in flash as long as it has a hotshoe (SEF-8 is still pretty small ^_^).

You're joking, right?

no

The target audience this camera is aimed at do not want a hotshoe and to carry an extra external flash.

Then they probably don't want this camera, they might even need to, horror of all horrors, carry a second lens! I'm guessing you're not part of the target audience, and that you don't speak for them.

My comments there were about myself, not the target audience. Considering that I would buy with or without an internal flash, then maybe I am part of the target audience...

A built in flash is vital for night time and any low light social situations.

No, a flash, not necessarily built in, and it's also not the only option (e.g. led lighting attached to the hotshoe).

If it doesn't come with a flash, people just won't bother buying and using it over their average smart phones.

It has plenty to recommend it over a smart phone even if it doesn't come with a flash. Sure, it will definitely lose a portion of sales if they had an oversight and really did not include an internal flash, it will be a dealbreaker for quite a few.

I don't think you have the target audience correct though anyway.

This is an interchangeable lens camera. Buyers are obviously willing to carry another lens at least some of the time or they probably wouldn’t be considering this camera, and the SEF-8 is smaller than most lenses out there (though maybe not than the ones for this tiny camera). This isn't a step up from a cell phone camera, this is an enthusiast camera, and enthusiasts like options like having a hotshoe. I'm not making the argument that the target audience wouldn't also appreciate a built in flash, I believe that they would, I would too. I'm just saying that the cell phone shooter doesn't really seem like the target audience here. It's more like an option for someone that finds cell phone quality or shooting ergonomics etc.. to be unacceptable but still wants to take something with them fairly easily that offers better features, quality, and most importantly, flexibility. They already have perfectly good cameras that are targeted more towards those that are a bit less interested in flexibility, EX2F for instance (though I guess it could use an updated model), ... which still sports a hotshoe. Or their WB line of camera, which have neither other lenses, nor a hotshoe.

I guess I see this as a bit removed from the cell phone camera market:

cell phone cams -> point and shoots -> advanced point and shoots (e.g. EX2F, Bridge cameras) -> NXF1/Nikon 1/EOS M -> 2nd camera or entry level main lens system cameras (e.g. Rebel line)-> high end models of the previous supporting all the bells and whistles like recording video via HDMI output to a separate device mic inputs, tethered shooting, all that jazz.

So I guess I consider there to be two user groups in between. I do distinguish between user groups for cell phones and point and shoot cameras because I think that they are different kinds of users despite that they are in the same market group per se according to things like correlating cell phone sales increases and point and shoot sales declining.
