Higher resolution for a given format = less noise. So why cry about "too many megapixels"?

Higher resolution for a given format = less noise. So why cry about "too many megapixels"?

If it's really that big of a deal, just downsample. But it seems pretty stupid to choose to throw away resolution/detail for... I don't know what.
