Is it crazy to consider leaving my D800 at home while I travel

From my perspective: HELL YES, IT'S CRAZY

I assume photography is at the very least a hugely important hobby for you going by your long and rather expensive list of gear.

However, if you want to travel light opt for the one lens set up, in this case the great 1.4/24. With it you can cover just about everything worth shooting, especially considering the cropability of the D800. Telephotos or macros of flowers may be beautiful, but are seldom interesting.

I've hike the mountains a lot and even then, when weight is paramount, I bring a D800 sized dslr and one wide lens with close focus ability (2.8/28ais).

Bring the camera, you'll regret it if you don't.
