Re: Is it crazy to consider leaving my D800 at home while I travel

When traveling around in Cambodia I took a D3 with the 16mm fisheye, 14-24mm, 24-70mm, and 80-400mm VR I along with the SB-800 flash. When I go back it will be with the 16mm fisheye, the 24-70mm, and the 80-400mm VR II lens.

For the temple interiors the 16mm fisheye and 24-70mm were perfect along with the flash. When traveling by boat on the lakes and rivers the 80-400mm was the lens to have and the new version is a big improvement over the original.

I use a shoulder bag with a waist strap to carry the weight. I want optimum images from my trip. If not I would take a camera like the Olympus Pen E-P5 and the Olympus 9-18mm, 40-150mm, and 75-300mm lenses. Total weight for the Olympus kit would be 40 ounces or 2.5 lbs. and with a focal length range equivalent to 18-600mm with a FX camera. This is actually my wife's kit. The Olympus Pen E-P5 is a remarkable camera and provides very good images at ISO settings up to ISO 1600 that will easily holdup for 16x20 prints.
