used lenses vs. new with warranty

I've got a very nice system with all used entry-level lenses.  They are a great value and I did not care about a warranty.  Now, I'd like to upgrade to better glass, like the 70-200mm f4, for example.  I can save about $200, almost 15% by buying used, but would lose the 5-year warranty.

So I wonder if folks have found problems later than a few weeks after buying a lens.  It seems that these lenses are solid with hard-to-find defects being rare and lots of folks happily buy used.  I can buy lens, test it quickly and know whether to return it right away.  If it is ok for a few weeks, it will be ok for the long run.  Is that right?

Thanks for sharing your experiences.
