Suggestion for how to take photography to the next level?

I have a Nikon D5100 and being a beginner I read Rob Sylvan's "Nikon D5100: From Snapshots to Great Shots". It has been a year now and I have got a good understanding of the basic concepts and shoot mostly in manual. I am confident that I have started taking good pics.

Now, I am looking for an advice for how to take my skills to the next level. As per my understanding, there are two ways:

- Option 1: keep taking more and more shots w/o actually referring to a resource so basically undirected learning or

- Option 2: have some kind of directed learning from an intermediate/advanced level book or online videos or any such thing whatsoever

So, can you please suggest what should be the right path to take?
