It's about more than printing

Extra pixels makes every aspect of post processing more precise (at the cost of computer horsespower). Sharpening, contrast enhancement, edge detection, and noise reduction done on a larger image yields better results when eventually scaled down, as opposed to doing the same treatment on a smaller file— even if both will be reduced to the same size.
