Solution to compact super-telephoto?

I have an application where I need a super-telephoto in the range 280 to 350 mm for use on an FX camera (D800). Optical quality is important, speed less so. However, the overriding requirement is size - it should be a maximum of 130 mm long and ~95 mm in diameter. Subjects will be effectively at infinity (>100 m) so focus breathing and AF are not issues. Compatibility with 77mm filters and good near-infrared performance would be useful bonuses.

I am currently considering the MC Rubinar 4.5/300 M42 Cat with Nikon adapter or taking a shorter telephoto and permanently using a Kenko Pro 2x or 3x teleconverter (taking into account overall length). Has anyone got any better ideas?
