How to pick and peel prickly pears

Some of you might not know how to pick and peel this delicious fruit and avoid the extremely fine spines getting to your skin.

The fruit contains a lot of seeds which are quite hard. The best way to enjoy it is to just crush the pulp in your mouth without trying to chew the seeds and swallow everything.

They taste better chilled.

I have this video clip taken with the MX-1 on my flickr site if you wish to look at it. The noise you will hear was just surrounding noise...sorry!

One way of picking them. Would help to immerse the fruits in a baket of water to soften the spines and stop them flying to your skin.

Cut both ends of the fruit avoiding the "pimple" looking spots which contain hundreds of almost invisible spines.

Both end are cut

Make an incision across the fruit approximately 5mm (1/4") deep

Flip over the edges of the skin

Flatten the cut skin

Pick the the the inside of the fruit...and enjoy!

Discard the skin properly in the trash and wast the instruments thoroughly.
