BIF will be fine.  I use the Sigma 150-500 for BIF and autofocus on my D300s is very slow at f/8.  I use the center point almost exclusively and do not use continuous focus.  I point at the bird, get focus, and track it.  In my experience, at least with my equipment, this works much better than any of the tracking modes.  Any other settings and techniques tend to not get focus at all, focus on background or foreground, hunt too much, etc.  The only difficulty I have using this method is tracking fast erratic birds, for example in the US, swifts, swallows, etc. can be tough.  Anyway, I don't have my Tamron (Nikon mount) yet, but I don't expect it to behave much differently than the Sigma in this regard.
