Some vacation snap shots (winter birding festival)

My wife and I attended our third annual Sax-Zim winter birding festival last week. Nothing more romantic for valentines day then sitting in a frozen bog waiting for an owl to come out into the open! We stayed at a wonderful victorian B&B in Duluth MN. I dragged my usual photo kit along - a 5D3 for landscapes and people and a E-5 for the nature shots. Two bodies, four lenses, a speedlight and two tripods =~50 pounds of gear! Good thing the snow was only waist deep or I might have been slowed down by all the gear!

It was great to take a hot path at the end of a cold day!

Lydia, at Beaners coffee shop, made a great 'Himalayan' latte!

If the snow got too deep there was always this giant rotary snow plow to fall back on!

We hiked out onto the frozen lake Superior to see the Apostle island ice caves.

and we did find owls, here is a Northern Hawk Owl.

and here is a Snowy Owl.
