SD1 Quattro Engineering Challenges

Yamaki-san clearly articulated the challenges of updating the SD system to the Quattro sensor first.  The DP lines solves a lot of issues in supporting such high resolution from such a small sensor.  Remember this thing beats a Full Frame 36MP and is swimming in the low end of MF with even bigger sensors and lenses.

The focus calibration issue could easily be mitigated with by implementing a user calibration routine in the firmware where one mounts their lens on the body and shoot a supplied target at various distances.  The software could shoot multiple exposures of each using the Phase Detect system and reference to a contrast detect on the sensor.  Comparing the two the camera could build a calibration table for each lens that can be saved in memory and recalled by lens identity. This would take the guess work out of micro adjustment. Some may say keep ditch the mirror system all together but I think it has a lot of value for sports shooting and battery life optimization.

The camera will need to firmly embrace shooting with live view for contrast detect focusing when possible.  A flippy LDC screen like the Sony/Oly/Fuji high end mirror less would make using it much easier and is a simple addition.

My next idea to improve the mirror less operation and vibration minimization would be the first DSLR system to integrate leaf shutters into SA mount lenses like Leica S system.  This would also appeal to MF shooter who do outdoor strobe work to be freed of sync restrictions on shutter speed on a smaller cheaper system. This would make live view shooting really smooth since the mirror and focal plane shutter could remain motionless and out of the way.

That is a possible path I see forward, Sigma is getting creative and is not afraid of bold moves evidenced by the new dpQ family.
