...my point was that when whole playing field is in sharp focus - including even the fans on the far stands in the BG - it doesn't and it shouldn't surprise anyone that the central action was captured sharp!! And that is a domain of P&S.

However, if one wants throw BGs OOF, the real challenge to get critical focus on action, yet all the rest only as a nicely bokehized blur starts to be evident. I didn't find in your samples any basketball scenes, but it the one with geese and 7d will do very nicely - birds formation in excellent focus, yet the trees (which we can reasonably assume to be at the position of public stands of a baseball field) are completely OOF:

Translate the distances, FLs with APS-C camera, targets, etc. to the not so excellently lit basketball game, and the challenge will be real. Whereas the P&S one wasn't
