All messed up and confused

Resolution is confusing and contest owners are among those people who don't have any idea what they are up to.

Here's what matters.

They want a picture that when printed to 5 x 7 inches uses 300 pixels for each inch of length and width.

300 x 5 is 1500 pixels

300 x 7 is 2100 pixels

So you can use the sizing capabilities of your software to re-size your shot so it is 1500 pixels wide, across the part you want to turn out to be 5 inches on the final printed piece.

The 7 inch piece will automatically turn into 7 x 300 = 2100 pixels.

DPI is a term based on printing on a printing press. It means dots per inch.

PPI is a term used in digital printing. It means pixels per inch.

When files are prepared for printing, lots of things happen to them electronically.

And the people who want the files are often clueless.

If they want to rint an 8 x10, they'll want a file 2400 x 3000 pixels, except 240 ppi would work fine too. Partly it depends on the press, or the desktop printer.
