Best lens for getting more in focus?

Hi guys,

I've had my Canon 5D MkIII for about a year now and I've been shooting some great video material (I don't use it for stills whatsoever). I'm generally happy with the results I'm getting and I'm getting better at it all the time.

My main lens (apart from the 24-105mm kit lens that came with it, which I rarely use) is the Canon 50mm f.14. It's fine for getting that nice depth of field film look, but even with good light and some follow-focus kung-fu, I'm struggling to keep different people in the shot in focus.

I can get someone nicely in focus, then they move back four inches, and, boom - it's gone - and the shot is ruined.

So, what I'm looking for is a lens that will give me more of the subject(s) in focus for longer - but without breaking the bank (I'm thinking sub-£500).

Any suggestions?
