Nikon D5100 Best Lens Combo

I have recently purchased a D5100 body only and sold my D40 with the 18-55 standard kit lens non VR. I still have my Nikon 55-200 non VR and 70-300 4.5-5.6  VR.

Much of my photography has so far been wildlife focussed and I find the 70-300 excellent for this purpose, it takes great photos on safari but I have also used the lighter 55-200 to good effect as well.

My question is, that with a budget of around £300 which general purpose walkabout lens would give me the best real world optical results on the D5100. Current thinking is to get the Nikon 18-105 VR or even the Tamron 18-200 (to replace 55-200). The money I save on this lens (especially the latter) may give me the option of going for a prime lens e.g. 35mm/40mm perhaps?

From a IQ perspective given limited budget can anyone give me their views or suggestions on what might work best in combination with the 70-300?

Any advice gratefully received.
