If you're intending to use JPEGs right out of the camera, you want an exposure that produces good-looking images (which is what matrix metering is aiming for). If you're intending to postprocess RAW images, you want an exposure that captures as much information as possible, for example, ETTR, which could produce unpleasantly light images right out of the camera.
