I think part of the problem is that the similarity to PS2 texture compression is somewhat misleading you as to how the sensor works. It's not really the same thing... people are claiming it's a kind of YUV thing but that's just a simplified model to think about it in a way that makes more sense than RGB - it's still not the same way it actually works.

The similarity comes in how you preserve detail/ luminance to drive detail.  It certainly makes the most sense to preserve detail.
