Any Canon S90 repair gurus?

Starting a few months ago, sometimes when I switched on my S90, no image from the sensor would appear on the LCD. The lens extends, the front flap opens and the normal overlay info appears on the LCD, no error messages - but nothing from the sensor, and if I take a picture it is blank. Sometimes everything worked normally, but this happened less and less. Naturally, I had a camera shop send it for a repair quotation, but was quoted an uneconomical cost (about £250) for replacement of the lens assembly -  that surprised me, as I was thinking of a faulty internal connection. I had the camera returned and occasionally try it again, but it last worked (after the return) in December - I switched it on, was startled to see an image on the LCD and I took a couple of pictures successfully, which I can always review on the LCD - since then, no joy with taking another picture.

So, it is basically a brick now, which is a shame as it was a nice P&S when it was working. I do have other cameras, and this one was never dropped or anything and has been lightly used. Just wondered if anyone had an idea.
